I have been an LP supporter from the beginning. Going through all the experts for their time and advice and coming into this portion of the battle with straightforward information resources is invaluable. I have not seen Stuart on any broadcast talking with so much background and history of his political journey. This Pink Mafia piece starting way back and naming names is pandora's box into the GOP and our future. Who hasn't asked about Lindsey Graham? Read part one with eye opening anticipation for the rest of the series.
Terrific piece. As a Democrat and elected public official, I was not unaware of the number of Republican office holders who are gay, but what breaks my heart is the inner struggle that causes a level of self-hate that is crippling them, and in the process, our politics. I am a straight white male, but I would die on the hill of protecting marriage equality. Why? Two reasons: (1) because it is the right thing to do and not so different from Rick Wilson, I have a liberal libertarian streak that echoes his question what business is it of the government who gets married as I cite to Pope Francis’ query “who am I to judge?” Especially when you see loving relationships and commitment that define morality, and when you realize those loving relationships fulfill all the anthropological justifications for society's favoring the institution of marriage in promoting stability in society, and when you see loved, stable, well-raised children of these marriages, what are opponents of marriage equality talking about? And (2) at a time when the institution of marriage is struggling, here is an entire group of people who desire to embrace the challenging and sincere commitment “’till death do we part”. Welcome! I have a number of gay married friends and I will be damned if their relationships are any less valid than my own as I approach my 43rd wedding anniversary. But when people loathe themselves because they cannot come to grips with who they are, there is little chance of rapprochement. What more we can do besides accepting and caring for them, I know not. But I would not want to be in their position and hope they can one day find themselves and give voice to the love that resides in their hearts, but that hitherto they dare not speak.
I really enjoyed both Stuart’s piece and this conversation. But it begs the question: when they come after Obergefell, then is it time to out these hypocritical, self-hating mofos? Is outing, in your minds, ever justified or necessary? And if not, how do we expose this rot, these broken people, before they break us?
It is way past time to out hypocritical republicans politicos who actively harm the LGBTQ community with their words and actions. I hope Stuart's series not only addresses the history of the Pink Mafia in the GOP, but also addresses the current elected politicians who are voting for legislation that hurts the community.
